Make Marketing Suck Less

So this is the New Year and Do You Want to Feel Different?

“So this is the New Year and I don't feel any different” sings Death Cab for Cutie.

The New Year gives us the opportunity to reassess and to make the choice to feel different. I've never been one for making resolutions, but I do believe in setting goals. Although I've always been lousy at writing them down or sharing them with others. I can choose differently.

Yesterday, I read Rich Hopkin's Blog: Speak and Deliver. He bravely and honestly assessed how he did accomplishing the goals he set for himself at the beginning of 2011. It's worth the read if you are looking for inspiration in crafting your life. His blog inspired me to write this entry.

With the start of this blog and dedicating myself to actively pursue my passion of communication, I realized that the most important relationship is the relationship with myself. With that in mind, here are my goals for 2012 – they may not be SMART goals (yet), but they are heartfelt goals.

1. Grow my readership of Relationally Speaking – it's a new blog so growing readership is my top priority. It means building a relationship with you all that are reading it by providing useful information about communication.

2. Develop content that is unique, intriguing and helpful – this goal goes hand-in-hand with goal #1.

3. Join an advanced Toastmasters club – speaking is a skill that requires continuous improvement and Toastmasters is the perfect place for feedback and lifelong learning.

4. Take a 5-7 minute speech and turn it into a keynote presentation then give it somewhere/anywhere – thinking about this overwhelms me but I can do it!

5. Compete and win at the World Championship of Public Speaking.

6.  Master the skill of marketing – I've never been very good at “marketing” and I've always resisted it. If I am going to follow my passion, I need to step outside the comfort zone.

7. Mentor more speakers in the art of public speaking – I'm already doing this through Toastmasters, but honestly coaching others is my favorite part of speaking. I'd like to be doing a lot more mentoring/coaching.

What life do you want to cultivate in 2012? How are you building the relationship with yourself? Please feel free to share your comments and thoughts. I'd love to hear from you and respond!

Happy New Year!
